Dr. Carcione is an osteopathic physician . D.O.'s are physicians fully trained in every aspect of medicine and surgery throughout all 50 states. Within the United States, only M.D.'s and D.O.'s are recognized as complete physicians. D.O.'s may be found within every subspecialty of medicine and surgery.

D.O.'s prescribe medicine and physical therapy, perform surgery, and administer nerve blocks. In addition to a traditional medical curriculum, D.O.'s receive extra training in neuromusculoskeletal anatomy, physiology, pathology, and Osteopathic Principles and Practice (OPP). These additions allow D.O.'s to perform, when deemed medically necessary, Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT). OMT allows a D.O. to diagnose and treat illness or injury with a distinct hands-on approach.

OMT is not chiropractic or physical therapy. It is a unique blend of manipulation based on traditional medical training and Osteopathic Medicine's distinct principles and practices. There will be more about this unique form of therapy later on. (Click here to learn more about Osteopathic Medicine). Given this, the osteopathic approach truly offers comprehensive, wholistic care.

Dr. Carcione is a graduate of the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed residency training in neurology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx, New York. During his chief residency year, he focused his training and electives in pain management, working with the Pain Center at Montefiore Hospital, under the direction of the Department of Anesthesia. After completion of his neurology residency training, Dr. Carcione went on to focus studies on Clinical Neurophysiology, completing his Fellowship in Clinical EMG and Neuromuscular Disease under the direction of the Montefiore Medical Center's Department of Neurology Clinical EMG Laboratory.

After completion of his training, Dr. Carcione joined a group practice in the Bronx, where he served as the consulting neurologist and clinical neurophysiologist. During this time, the practice grew focusing its efforts on clinical neurophysiology, neuromusculoskeletal disorders, and OMT. In addition, he developed an outpatient-testing program for hemodialysis patients to evaluate uremic neuropathy. By the winter of 1996, the framework for CWNC was in development and it was opened in June of the same year.
